Near the Canal Saint-Martin, a well-located hotel

Our hotel is situated in the République district, bordered by the Canal Saint-Martin to the east and Gare de l’Est to the north. No confusion here—Place de la République is just a bit south of our hotel, less than 400 meters away.

A trendy and lively area of Paris, Place de la République has always been a gathering place for crowds, artists, creatives, and the city’s active population. It’s a place full of energy, where the Canal Saint-Martin brings a soothing contrast with its calm waters and shaded banks.

A brief history of the Canal Saint-Martin

The Canal Saint-Martin is a waterway in northeastern Paris. Originally built to supply the city with drinking water, it brings freshness and life to the urban landscape. Stretching for 4.5 kilometers, it connects the Bassin de la Villette, and beyond it the Canal de l’Ourcq, to the Arsenal Marina near Bastille, which itself connects to the Seine.

Inaugurated in 1825, the Canal Saint-Martin features nine locks and two swing bridges. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1993 and is part of the 130-kilometer network of Parisian canals.

We owe the creation of the Canal Saint-Martin to Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 19th century. At the time, Paris suffered from a poor and insufficient drinking water supply, with the Seine and the Bièvre River heavily polluted, leading to frequent outbreaks of dysentery and cholera. The First Consul ordered action to resolve this crisis.

The city’s prefect revived old canal projects dating back to the 16th century and proposed extending the Canal de l’Ourcq, whose source lies about 100 kilometers northeast of Paris. However, the Napoleonic Wars delayed construction, and it was ultimately King Louis XVIII who revived the project, while his brother, Charles X, inaugurated the canal in 1825.

Under Napoleon III, during the grand modernization of Paris led by Prefect Haussmann, parts of the Canal Saint-Martin were covered, notably by the Boulevard Richard-Lenoir.

The Golden Age of the Canal Saint-Martin

Although another section of the canal was covered by Boulevard Jules-Ferry in 1908, this period marked its golden age. A high volume of boat traffic made the Bassin de la Villette—the canal’s starting point—the fourth-largest port in France. No longer just a water supply, the canal became a key trade route, transporting both essential goods and construction materials.

By the 1960s, competition from rail and road transport reduced the canal’s economic significance. In the 1970s, it even faced the threat of being replaced by a four-lane urban highway—fortunately, that project was never realized. Today, we can be grateful, as the Canal Saint-Martin remains a beloved spot for both Parisians and visitors.

A Waterway Cherished by Parisians

Within Paris, the canal serves as a refreshing haven, supporting natural vegetation and aquatic wildlife in the heart of the city. During nesting season, dozens of bird species can be spotted, including grey herons and mallard ducks. Observant visitors may even catch sight of grass snakes, green and red frogs, and wall lizards.

In recent years, the global migration crisis has led to temporary refugee encampments along Quai de Jemmapes. However, the canal is also famous for its appearances in cinema. The classic 1938 film Hôtel du Nord by Marcel Carné featured iconic scenes shot here, as did Amélie (Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain) by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

The Canal Saint-Martin, located just beside our hotel, is an integral part of Parisian culture and history.

A hotel in a peaceful parisian neighborhood

Despite its trendy vibe, the Canal Saint-Martin district is a peaceful and relaxing area—an ideal retreat after a day of sightseeing in the French capital. The canal’s banks, the small green spaces they create, the tranquility of the flowing water, and the wildlife it attracts all contribute to a sense of calm and well-being. Our hotel is perfectly positioned between the bustling Place de la République and the quieter Canal Saint-Martin.

Moreover, the hotel is ideally located for travelers arriving by train from Gare du Nord or Gare de l’Est, both just a short walk down Boulevard Magenta from 9Hotel République.

From Place de la République, numerous metro and bus lines provide easy access to key destinations across Paris and the Île-de-France region. This prime location makes our hotel the perfect place to stay for exploring the city and beyond.

In a natural and idyllic setting, the canal Saint Martin offers an ideal landscape to all Paris’ lovers.

A peaceful hotel in Paris

As a great place for excursions and relaxation with romantic bridges and mysterious vaults, Parisians and tourists love to walk along the canal or to stop at the numerous bars in the district. Throughout the year, rediscover the Paris of yesteryear on board of different cruises.

This architectural masterpiece is the departure point for numerous high-speed train lines to Alsace, Lorraine, as well as foreign destinations such as Germany and Poland. It also provides access to the Île-de-France rail network via the metro or RER, making it easy to travel throughout Paris and its suburbs.

How to get to Gare de l’Est?

Located near Gare du Nord, just a few minutes’ walk away, Gare de l’Est is served by metro lines 4, 5, and 7, providing easy access from Paris and its outskirts. Taking metro line 4 towards Porte d’Orléans, you can easily travel from Gare de l’Est to Gare Montparnasse.
To get from Gare de Lyon to Gare de l’Est, take metro lines 1 and 5, with a travel time of about 20 minutes. To reach Orly Airport from Gare de l’Est, there are several metro, train, and bus options, taking approximately 40 minutes.

A Hotel Near Cafes and Restaurants

"Chez Aldo Gare de l’Est" is a popular restaurant on your way from 9Hotel République, located close to "Chez Schmid," known as the ambassador of Alsace in Paris. This charming establishment was founded in 1904 to provide Alsatians with a welcoming retreat after their long railway journey to the capital.
A little further east, opposite the Canal Saint-Martin but not far from Chez Schmid and Chez Aldo, is the famous crêperie "Fait ta crêpe." To get there from 9Hotel République, simply head north along Boulevard Magenta.
There are many more brasseries, cafés, and restaurants to discover in this neighborhood between Place de la République and Gare de l’Est.

History of the former Strasbourg station

Gare de l’Est, located next to 9Hotel République, has a history spanning over 170 years. Situated in Paris’ 10th arrondissement, near Gare du Nord, it is easily accessible on foot or by metro. It was originally established to connect Paris to Strasbourg after lengthy negotiations. In fact, its location—just steps from Gare du Nord and not truly in the east of Paris—almost led to its cancellation. At the time, Strasbourg could have been served by Gare du Nord, Gare de Lyon or even Gare d’Austerlitz.
Ultimately, it was built on the site of the Saint-Laurent Enclosure, where the Saint-Laurent Fair took place until the early 19th century. This area had originally been granted to lepers by King Louis VI the Fat. The station was inaugurated in 1850 by the future Emperor Napoleon III.

The most beautiful Station in the world?

Classified as a historic monument and long considered the most beautiful railway station in the world, Gare de l’Est is a neo-classical building with a limestone façade. Over the years, many architectural elements have been added while respecting its original style—except for the large transverse hall and its two Art Deco entrances on Rue d’Alsace and Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin.
The western wing, with its oldest façade, features a half-rose window and a clock flanked by sculptures representing the Seine and the Rhine rivers. On the gable of this hall, an allegorical statue of Strasbourg stands as a testament to the station’s symbolic orientation towards the Grand Est region, despite not being located in the actual east of Paris.

An important station in Paris

In terms of passenger traffic, Gare de l’Est ranks fifth among Paris’ six major railway terminals. With over 41 million travelers annually, according to SNCF, its activity, which had declined after the launch of the RER E, surged again with the introduction of the TGV Est, increasing passenger numbers by 22%.
In 2007, the year the LGV Est Européenne high-speed line was launched, an Alstom Transport prototype train set a world speed record of 574.8 km/h. Today, it is possible to travel by train from Paris to Berlin, Warsaw, Moscow, Minsk, Vienna, Budapest, and even Istanbul.
A shuttle service between Gare de l’Est and Charles-de-Gaulle Airport's TGV station is currently under consideration.

Gare de l’Est in culture

Several famous paintings, notably by Maximilien Luce, depict Gare de l’Est in the early 20th century. The station gained particular attention from painters and writers during World War I, as many French soldiers (the "Poilus") passed through it on their way to the Eastern Front. As a tribute, American painter Albert Herter donated a monumental painting titled Le Départ des Poilus, août 1914, which still hangs in the main hall.
Gare de l’Est has also been featured in numerous French films, highlighting its aesthetic appeal. Notable movies include Zazie dans le Métro, L’Homme de Rio, La Grande Vadrouille, Le Cerveau, Les Ripoux, and Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain.

A hotel in a quiet parisian neighborhood

The Gare de l’Est district, where our hotel is located, is peaceful and calm despite its proximity to Place de la République and two major train stations, Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est. Nearby, the Canal Saint-Martin and the Belleville district offer green spaces and waterways, providing travelers with a refreshing retreat after a busy day.
Additionally, the close proximity of these two stations is convenient for long-distance travelers wishing to drop off their luggage at their hotel upon arrival. Since the hotel is also just a few steps from Place de la République, it is an excellent base for exploring Paris and its surroundings using public transportation. Numerous metro, RER, and bus lines depart from this hub, making 9Hotel République an ideal place to stay in Paris.

Our hotel is a stone's throw from Place de la République in the heart of the 10th arrondissement

A major urban, historical and popular crossroads, Place de la République is one of the most emblematic squares in Paris. At its center stands the Monument à la République and its famous bronze relief, inaugurated in 1883. The statue of Marianne, the allegory of France, stands on the precise border of the city's 3rd, 10th and 11th arrondissements, in the extension of rue du Temple, boulevard du Temple, boulevard Voltaire and rue du Faubourg du Temple.

Place de la République: a popular meeting point in Paris

The place de la République is a true rallying point in Paris, and it has its own symbolic significance at concerts, events and political demonstrations. Originally built under the Second Empire, as a continuation of the works of Baron Haussmann, it has undergone many urban and architectural modifications. Renovated in 2013 at the initiative of the city of Paris, it is now entirely for pedestrians.

A hotel in Paris 10 close to tourist attractions

Located between the le Canal Saint-Martin and the “very beautiful and very useless Porte Saint-Denis”, as the initiator of Surrealism André Breton wrote in “Nadja” that he didn't spend three days without seeing it, on the Boulevard de Bonne-Nouvelle, a stone's throw from the Boulevard de Strasbourg, our Paris 10 hotel is in the lively heart of Paris.
From this doorway, you can quickly reach the Sentier or Marais districts in the historic center of Paris. A few minutes' walk is all it takes, and the leisurely stroller will soon be walking to the church of Saint-Eustache, Châtelet, or the nearby Centre Pompidou.

If he prefers to push on towards the Seine, he'll soon be under the arches of the Palais du Louvre or the arcades of the Rue de Rivoli. From there, you can either cross the Seine via the Pont-Neuf or the Pont des Arts, heading for the Île de la Cité and Notre-Dame Cathedral or the Latin Quarter towards la Sorbonne, or continue along the right bank of the Seine towards the Jardin des Tuileries and Place de la Concorde.
Whichever way you turn, when you leave the 9Hotel République, the possibilities for sightseeing, strolling and discovery are endless. To the east, the Canal Saint-Martin forms part of the route to the Belleville and Ménilmontant districts, small hills from the top of which Paris appears quite different from the vertical city seen from the central boulevards. To the north of Belleville lies the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, and to the south, the famous and beautiful Père-Lachaise Cemetery.
To the west, just outside our hotel in Paris' tenth arrondissement, you'll find the Musée Grévin and the l’Opéra Garnier.

A hotel near the Place de la République

For those who don't want to travel so far to enjoy Paris' 10th arrondissement, the Place de la République is very close to the hotel. One of the largest and most famous squares in Paris, it is now entirely pedestrianized, and many Parisians gather here for concerts, events and festive and popular gatherings.
The Monument à la République has been enthroned at the center of the square since it took on its present name in the late 19th century, and, recognizable from afar, it is an emblematic rallying point in Paris.
Whether it's for the Paris Carnival in the 19th century, running races, political, trade union or cultural events, or more recently, the Place de la République in the tenth arrondissement is a regular meeting place.
So, in the aftermath of the November 13, 2015 attacks that plunged France into mourning, particularly in the eastern districts of Paris, not far from the Place de la République, this is where the French came to mourn and oppose the terrorist attacks.

A hotel in Paris 10 near the Parisian theaters

The area around 9Hotel République is still home to Parisian theaters, of which there are many on the grands boulevards. These boulevards, which were built on the site of the old Parisian ramparts, have been home to numerous theaters around the Porte Saint-Martin since the 18th century. A place for strolling, it has given a certain light, comic theater full of twists and turns its nickname. The term “boulevard” is often used to describe the comedies of manners that have been delighting audiences for centuries.
The Grands Boulevards, in Paris's 10th arrondissement, are also home to famous movie theaters such as the Grand Rex, a stone's throw from the Théâtre Bonne-Nouvelle. A little further on, past the famous Musée Grévin, begins Boulevard Haussmann, which leads to the Grand Magasins, Printemps and Galeries Lafayette, sumptuous Art Nouveau buildings whose illuminated and decorated windows are a must-see at Christmas, for the spectacle they project, delighting young and old alike.

Paris X, a lively district of the capital

In addition to cultural activities, the streets of Paris' tenth arrondissement are alive with friendly neighborhood life. Numerous restaurants, cafés and bars with lively terraces are within walking distance of the 9Hotel République. Via rue du Château d'Eau, in the direction of the 10th arrondissement town hall, Le Comptoir du Marché is a very pleasant place to dine or have a drink. Located right next to the Marché Saint-Martin, it stocks up on fresh produce, and offers a vast terrace in fine weather.
Other bistros, such as Le Réveil du 10ème and Bistrot brune, adjoin it and liven up the street as far as the Town Hall, after which the lively Château d'Eau district can be surprisingly diverse, bringing plenty of life to the streets.
A little higher up is the Saint-Quentin covered market, at the top of boulevard Magenta, a stone's throw from Gare de l'Est, where you'll find delicious fish and seafood, such as at Le canot vendéen fishmonger's or Poissonnerie du petit bateau. This large green cast-iron, glass and pink-brick market hall is a lively Parisian landmark, visited by local residents every day except Monday, when it's closed, but especially at weekends, on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Not far from Marché Saint-Quentin and Gare de l'Est, on the way back to our 9Hotel République, you'll find the magnificent Saint-Laurent church, listed as a historic monument. Its earliest foundations date back to the 5th century, and it was mentioned by the famous historian and bishop Grégoire de Tours. Rebuilt in the 15th century in the flamboyant Gothic style, it's well worth a visit.

Rivaling the Musée du Louvre for the richness of its collections, it attracts curious art and culture lovers from all over the world. The area around the museum is bustling with art, culture and festivities, with students, street artists and passers-by all making their presence felt. The view of Paris from the terraces of the Musée Georges-Pompidou is incomparable, and rivals the finest paintings to be found on its walls.

You'll cross old Paris to the Centre Pompidou, and can even take rue Quincampoix, which runs parallel to rue Saint-Martin and boulevard de Sébastopol, and is one of the oldest in the city. This medieval street is famous for having been a place of prostitution, but also for having housed Law's bank, where in 1720 terrible riots took place when the bank, which had issued banknotes, was unable to provide the gold to back them up.

The Centre Pompidou is not just a museum, it's also a cultural space offering a rich and eclectic program of cinema, theater, dance, concerts, meetings and conferences throughout the year, making Beaubourg a multidisciplinary space unique in the world. And if it's not yet time to eat, don't forget to visit one of the Centre Pompidou's bookshops, which offer a unique selection of 20th- and 21st-century art books, or the boutique, which offers a wide choice of reproductions, souvenirs and gifts to suit all budgets.
