Georges Pompidou national art and cultural centre
Located in the Beaubourg district of Paris, the Centre Pompidou was born of President Pompidou's desire to create a multi-cultural establishment entirely dedicated to contemporary art. Inaugurated in 1977, the museum is a work of art in itself, with its original architecture and colorful pipes, and houses the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe: Picasso, Kandinsky, Matisse, Dali...
Rivaling the Musée du Louvre for the richness of its collections, it attracts curious art and culture lovers from all over the world. The area around the museum is bustling with art, culture and festivities, with students, street artists and passers-by all making their presence felt. The view of Paris from the terraces of the Musée Georges-Pompidou is incomparable, and rivals the finest paintings to be found on its walls.
A museum in the Marais district near the 9Hotel République
The 9Hotel République is just a few minutes' walk from the Quartier du Marais, a historic district of Paris with a rich cultural and festive life.
The Centre Pompidou, also known as Beaubourg, is located in the Marais district, not far from other emblematic museums such as the Picasso National Museum and the Museum of Jewish Art and History, and just a stone's throw from Les Halles, the beating heart of Paris. Strolling from the hotel to the Georges Pompidou Center for Modern and Contemporary Art, you'll visit some of the capital's most beautiful neighborhoods. The Porte Saint-Martin, which so fascinated André Breton, the inventor of Surrealism, is 300 meters from the hotel and leads to the Rue Saint-Martin, which leads to the Musée des Arts et Métiers and, further on, to the Musée de l'illusion. You'll cross old Paris to the Centre Pompidou, and can even take rue Quincampoix, which runs parallel to rue Saint-Martin and boulevard de Sébastopol, and is one of the oldest in the city. This medieval street is famous for having been a place of prostitution, but also for having housed Law's bank, where in 1720 terrible riots took place when the bank, which had issued banknotes, was unable to provide the gold to back them up.
Beaubourg culture, two metro stations from the hotel
The Centre Pompidou is not just a museum, it's also a cultural space offering a rich and eclectic program of cinema, theater, dance, concerts, meetings and conferences throughout the year, making Beaubourg a multidisciplinary space unique in the world. Whether for children, schoolchildren or the more discerning, there are numerous artistic and cultural activities on offer, all of which are of the highest quality.
Finally, at the very top of this museum with its original architecture, you can spend an unforgettable moment on the terrace of restaurant Georges. To get there, you can take the long escalators that ascend the monument from the outside, in large Plexiglas tubes from which you stretch effortlessly towards the city's summits, discovering new monuments with delight at every step.
And if it's not yet time to eat, don't forget to visit one of the Centre Pompidou's bookshops, which offer a unique selection of 20th- and 21st-century art books, or the boutique, which offers a wide choice of reproductions, souvenirs and gifts to suit all budgets. And perhaps it's with your arms full of gifts that you'll return later to the 9Hotel République.
